The Power of Words
As a tree gives us fruit, healing words give us life. But evil words crush the spirit. Proverbs 15:4 ICB
The words we speak have power. Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. Proverbs 18:21 KJV
What we say to ourselves and what we allow others to speak into our lives has the power to give us life or death. Words can heal and help if used effectively, but they can also corrupt and destroy if we use them recklessly.
“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.”
If we are truly honest with ourselves words do hurt. There are people who have said some evil words to us that crippled our self-esteem and broke our confidence.
Reflecting, appearance flaws pointed out by others affected me in a negative way for a long time. Growing up, I had an overbite and a gap that I hated - only because of what people said about me. Their evil words produced self-doubt and a lack of confidence in my physical appearance.
What’s your story? Share a time someone has spoken life or death into you. How did it impact you?
“A man’s stomach will be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; He will be satisfied with the consequence of his words. Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it and indulge it will eat its fruit and bear the consequences of their words.” Proverbs 18:20-21 AMP
What words are you speaking to yourself and over your life now? Are they affirmative or demeaning? Are you declaring life or death?
There were times I would tell myself,
“You know you can’t do that!"
"You are not talented enough!”
“You’re not saved enough!”
Have you spoken these similar negative statements to yourself?
We know the power of words and the fruit of them. We must choose to affirm ourselves with God’s word and positive words that give us life. I pray that we continue to use our words to speak life, build, edify, and encourage ourselves and others.
